How to play
Far flung Game.
Find a country that fits the clue. Aim beyond your first idea. See how far five pins can take you.
Start an expedition ↗From the first clue to camp
- Start the daily expedition. A five-question set is shared by everyone playing this edition on the same UTC date. Your timer starts when the first question appears.
- Read the complete clue. There can be many valid countries. The atlas uses common English names. At camp, each answer list includes a scope note explaining the spelling, region or geographic rule.
- Place your pin. Tap or click land on the map. The selected country appears beside the map unless you enabled hidden names. You can move your pin before submission.
- Press Drop pin. You get one submitted answer per question. A pin that is only placed, but never submitted, does not count.
- Onward after the result. See your distance, then start the next round. After five answers, arrive at camp and expand each clue for its full answer list.
The clock keeps moving
A daily round lasts 60 seconds, or 30 seconds with the shorter-clock setting. Opening the menu, going to another tab or refreshing the page does not extend it. A timeout earns zero kilometres. There is no timer between rounds; the next clock starts when you select Onward.
Daily sets change at midnight UTC. An unfinished expedition keeps its original date and questions, even across midnight. The Past Week menu lets you choose a recent date; unfinished expeditions keep their original deadlines.
Scoring and rare answers
| Rating | Distance |
|---|---|
| ● Common | 40 km |
| ▲ Uncommon | 55 km |
| ◆ Rare | 70 km |
| ✦ Elusive | 85 km |
| ★ Farflung | 100 km |
| Wrong answer / timeout | 0 km |
Our ratings are editorial choices tied to each question. They do not come from real-time player statistics or the original game’s ratings. A perfect five-round expedition totals 500 km. The full list of valid answers stays hidden until your expedition is complete.
Moving around the map
- Mouse or touch: drag to pan; use the + and − controls to zoom. Pinch to zoom on a touch screen. Focus the map before using the mouse wheel so ordinary page scrolling stays comfortable.
- Keyboard: Tab to the map, then use arrow keys to pan and position a pin at the centre. Use + or − to zoom and Enter or Space to submit the placed pin.
- Small countries: zoom in. States smaller than 1,000 km² have a small locator dot as an extra tap target. Clicking one selects the country it represents.
- Reset: the Whole world (⊙) map button returns to the full world view without changing your answer.
Make the journey harder
The menu contains three independent settings: hide the selected country’s name, hide country borders, and halve the clock. Change these before starting a new expedition. Each enabled option contributes one asterisk to the shared result. The settings are fixed once that expedition starts.
Unlimited and Capital Quest
Unlimited shuffles five different clues from our 30-question bank with no countdown. Questions can repeat in later sessions. Capital Quest asks you to identify the country for a named capital, using five different countries from 197 country records. Correct answers earn 100 km and wrong answers earn 0 km, without rarity tiers. Both modes allow another journey after finishing and keep results only for the current session. They never change daily scores, logs or passports. The short-clock setting applies only to Daily Expedition.

Practice and saved journeys
Practice is the fixed untimed tutorial about country names ending in -stan. You can repeat it as often as you like. It does not consume your daily attempt or enter the expedition log. Daily progress and up to 90 daily records are stored in this browser when local storage works. The menu shows your latest seven completed journeys and your best saved score.
Countries, territories and boundaries
The answer set consists of the 193 United Nations member states plus Palestine, Vatican City, Kosovo and Taiwan. We use the common English names and geographic groupings in our bundled atlas. Regions, areas and land-neighbour lists follow this versioned dataset; a clue using those fields says so explicitly.
Covered dependent territories map to their associated country. Greenland maps to Denmark; Guam and Puerto Rico to the United States; French Guiana to France; and the Falkland Islands to the United Kingdom. A country-name clue uses the parent country’s name.
The map follows Natural Earth’s cartographic boundaries. Northern Cyprus maps to Cyprus and Somaliland to Somalia. Western Sahara is outside this edition’s selectable answer set. Antarctica is omitted. These are game conventions, without a position on sovereignty. Natural Earth can omit very small features; locator dots make the smallest included states playable.
Our atlas is a fixed snapshot. For example, its land-neighbour lists may predate newer border agreements. We expose that limitation in border questions, and keep the source downloadable on the data and credits page.
